Before initiating any High-Dose Vitamin C therapy, a blood draw is mandatory to ensure patient safety and eligibility. Patients who can provide valid and recent G6PD test results are exempt from undergoing a repeat G6PD test. However, a blood draw will still be required for other necessary lab work, including a Complete Metabolic Panel (CMP), Complete Blood Count (CBC), and Vitamin C serum levels. Please note that there will be an additional cost for this required lab work. Therapy will only proceed after lab results are reviewed and approved.
High-Dose Vitamin C Therapy for Cancer Patients
If you are seeking High-Dose Vitamin C therapy as a cancer patient, the specific protocol will be discussed during your lab work appointment. Regardless of any prior therapies you may have received, our protocol follows the trusted guidelines established by the Riordan Clinic. This includes starting with three consecutive infusions at 15 grams, 25 grams, and 50 grams, with post-infusion plasma Vitamin C levels to guide further therapy adjustments.
Vitamin C plays a crucial role for individuals undergoing chemotherapy. Research highlights its anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties, which may support the body’s ability to manage cancer-related challenges. High doses of Vitamin C could potentially help alleviate symptoms such as fatigue, appetite issues, and sleep disturbances in some cancer patients. However, it is essential to consult with your oncologist to determine the most appropriate approach for your specific condition
Included Vitamins & Minerals:
- 250-1000 ml of Lactated Ringers or Sterile Water (depends on dosage of Vitamin C)
- 15-100 grams of Vitamin C
- 200-400 mg of Magnesium (depends on dosage of Vitamin C)
Why do I need to provide G6PD lab results prior to receiving a high-dose Vitamin C infusion?
Prior to undergoing high-dose Vitamin C infusions (anything over 10,000 mg), it’s imperative to undergo a G6PD blood test to assess the levels of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), an enzyme vital for red blood cell health. G6PD deficiency, if present, may lead to complications when exposed to substances like Vitamin C at high doses, potentially causing damage to red blood cells. A negative test result indicates no deficiency, and it’s typically a one-time requirement as G6PD deficiency remains consistent over time.
G6PD deficiency can indeed pose life-threatening risks when exposed to high doses of Vitamin C. This deficiency affects the ability of red blood cells to withstand certain oxidative stressors, including Vitamin C in large quantities. In individuals with G6PD deficiency, the administration of high-dose Vitamin C can trigger the destruction of red blood cells, leading to hemolytic anemia and potentially severe complications. Thus, obtaining a negative result on the G6PD blood test before undergoing high-dose Vitamin C infusions is crucial for patient safety and well-being.
